A former Winona postmaster will serve two years probation, plus community service for opening greeting cards, taking an unspecified amount of cash and then destroying that mail.

Fifty-eight-year-old Sherri Genkinger was sentenced in federal court for “the delay or destruction of U.S. mail by a postal service employee.”

Genkinger claimed that work stress led to her doing it.

Investigators say they tracked down Genkinger when a retired police officer, looking into complaints from Winona State students about undelivered mail, sent his brother a greeting card with a five-dollar winning lottery ticket.

Genkinger was apprehended after she cashed it.
