Historic Notre Dame Cathedral in the heart of Paris is on fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet know. But there is a possible connection to the recent renovation of the building.

Anne Hidalgo the mayor of Paris posted to twitter to ask residents to stay away while firefights worked on controlling the blaze.

The historic gothic cathedral is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world and has inspired so many literary works. Most notably Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.

Notre Dame dates back to 1163 when the cornerstone was laid in the presence of Pope Alexander the third. The cathedral took almost a century to build, being mostly completed by 1260.
