Many Minnesota students are off school and taking part in the inaugural statewide youth deer season.

The four-day hunt began Thursday and coincides with M-E-A weekend.

The D-N-R says kids ages 10 to 17 can head into the fields with an adult and learn about hunting traditions.

Youth hunters can take one deer with a regular license.

Deer harvested in the southeast or north-central Minnesota zones must be tested for chronic wasting disease.

Blaze orange or pink are required for all hunters during this season.
