Weather and deteriorating ice conditions made it difficult for first responders to retrieve an injured snowmobiler Wednesday evening off a lake northeast of Detroit Lakes. The Becker County Sheriff's Office says they received the 9-1-1 call of a single snowmobile crash on Cotton Lake in Eire Township just before 5:40pm.
The caller, also the crash victim, 26 year old Nicholas Hanson of Rochert stated he had broken his leg in the crash about 300 yards out from the shoreline. The Sheriff's Office says the rescue of Hanson was extremely difficult because of the weather and ice conditions. Emergency personnel responded along with a side-by-side ATV and snowmobile with a tow-able rescue sled and became stuck due to the snow-slush mix and standing water on the lake from the ongoing rainfall.
Detroit Lakes Fire Department was dispatched to the scene with the Becker County Sheriff Office airboat. Emergency personnel were then able to reach Hanson with the airboat and get him safely back to shore. He was then transported by St. Mary's EMS to Essentia St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes.
