Inmates in Minnesota prisons were placed in solitary confinement more than eight-thousand times last year.

That's a number which has been going up -- and it established a new record.

The Minnesota Legislature passed a law last session requiring a mental health screening for any inmate who is placed in solitary.

Corrections officials say they want to give incentives to those inmates to work toward getting back into the general prison population.
