A big honor along the St. Croix River in eastern Minnesota for former Vice President Walter Mondale.

A section of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, several nearby park pavilions, river landings, plus a day-use area at William O'Brien State Park were renamed in honor of Mondale Tuesday.

As a U-S senator, Mondale sponsored the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 1968.

House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler, who spearheaded legislation to rename the Minnesota facilities, says Mondale "has left us a legacy of rugged and pristine beauty that countless Minnesotans have enjoyed, and will continue to enjoy."

Ninety-one-year-old Mondale says the area is where he proposed to his late wife Joan Adams Mondale.
