Utility companies in Minnesota and North Dakota are reminding customers to check their natural gas meter following a major snowstorm. Xcel Energy area manager Mark Nisbet says a blocked or snow-covered meter could create issues. He says there's a regulator on it that needs an intake of air to properly maintain the pressure so the furnace will continue operating properly. The utility is asking people to remove snow from the meter area with a shovel and by hand when getting close to it to help prevent problems. Homeowners should also make sure furnace vent pipes are not plugged with snow and ice.
