A Deer Creek man is out a large amount of money in what the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office is calling a loan scam.
The man had applied for a loan and received a check for over the original loan amount. The man had been instructed by the company to just cash the check and send the overage back to them. However, in the meantime the check was found by the man’s bank to be a worthless item.
The Sheriff’s Office says when the man realized it was a scam he contacted their department, and stated to them that his account was now overdrawn by $3200. The Deer Creek man’s bank froze his account, but totaled up he lost approximately $3,226.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office says it advises people to be extremely cautious when receiving an overage amount on any check from any online or other business transaction, and to contact authorities before trying to cash any suspicious looking checks.
