(MNN) -- Congressman Tom Emmer introduced a bill that creates a federal grant program for bridge improvements, replacement and repairs.
Emmer said, "over a decade after the collapse of the I-35W bridge our nation still has far too many bridges with structural deficiencies, and not enough is being done to address these serious safety concerns."
He says in Minnesota alone, an estimated one-point-five-million crossings over structurally deficient bridges happen every day. Eighty percent of those bridges are in rural areas.
The legislation would establish the National Bridge Replacement and Improvement Program through the U-S Department of Transportation.
