The so-called "grandchild in jail" scam claimed another victim recently after a Sartell area resident told the Stearns County sheriff's office they were duped out of four-thousand dollars.
The scammer called the victim claiming to be their grandchild in need of bail money. The victim was instructed to purchase multiple Target gift cards, then read the card numbers over the phone. The victim complied, but eventually realized it was a scam and tried to the freeze the cards.
The fraudsters had already used the money by that time. The sheriff's office says no law enforcement agency will take gift cards as bail.
