You will soon have to be 21 years old to buy cigarettes and tobacco products in 52 communities in Minnesota.
St. James, Golden Valley, Scandia voted Tuesday night to raise the tobacco age from 18 to 21. Minnesotans for a Smoke-Free Generation says Tobacco 21 ordinances counteract the youth nicotine epidemic that continues to affect teens across the state.
Studies also show reducing the tobacco sales age will reduce youth tobacco use and save lives.
The Golden Valley ordinance also prohibits the sale of all flavored tobacco products and increases the minimum price of cigars.
A total of 18 states have raised the tobacco age to 21.
