(MNN) A new study suggests Asian carp are to blame for a significant decline in sportfish populations on the Upper Mississippi River.
Analysis of nearly 20 years of data suggests the carp are out-competing other fish like yellow perch, bluegill and crappie.
The peer-reviewed study in this month's edition of Biological Invasions is among the first to establish a solid link.
Other researchers say the differences between habitats in various sections of the river can also affect fish numbers.
